Punk Rock Pastries: Morbid Treats that are Tasty to Eat

5 min

Vancouver, British Columbia is known for a lot things. Our beautiful city offers a diverse selection of beaches, mountains, parks, stores, restaurants, and tasty little one off places like bakeries, ice cream shops, candy stores and chocolatiers. I never expected to find morbid treats in my own backyard here in BC!

Just a hop, skip and jump away from Vancouver, down on Hastings Street in Burnaby, is a little bakery that you need to visit. Be warned, this is no ordinary bakery.

When you enter the store, a bright pink theme and cluttered unique art and trinkets dominate the small space and breaths life into this little shop.

The walls are so busy and intriguing; you almost don’t know where to look first. They even have a lounge area with a gorgeous red couch shaped like a pair of lips.

I was greeted by the owner and she was super friendly. She was able to answer my questions about ingredients as I have food allergies. I can only eat vegan treats. When she said they don’t bake anything with nuts because she is allergic, that gave me a sense of relief. If you are looking for peanut butter anything, keep walking.

Morbid Treats

I was super stoked when Hollie explained they have vegan options. This meant I could try something! For anyone else, there is such a variety to choose from, you are sure to find something you like. Whether you like cupcakes, donuts, pastries, cookies or cakes, Punk Rock Pastries has you covered!

I won’t go into the menu too much because according to their website, the menu changes daily, which I think is kind of cool. This means you never know what you will find when you stop by. A couple of the cool morbid ones that caught my eye today were:

  • Unicorn Poop: looked like it was straight out of the magical creature
  • Chocolate Cherry Toe Jam: actually had a toe on top
  • Black Heart Halos: black hearts with protruding syringes
  • Bleeding Bandaids: flesh with a bandaid on top
  • Blood Sunday: topped with a red skull
  • Black Betty: black icing topped with a gravestone
  • You Don’t Make Friends with Salad: topped with severed fingers
  • Bad Brains: giant cake with you guessed it, brains

Pastries and Cookies

If the morbid cupcakes are too much for you, the other options might be more up your alley. They had cinnamon buns, puffed pastries, specialty donuts and cookies.

My Samples

Today I purchased two treats: a Vegan Spiced Apple cupcake topped with an eyeball and a Black Betty cupcake topped with a gravestone.

My favourite was the apple spiced cupcake. I didn’t eat the eyeball as I am not a fan of fondant. The combination of the apple cake, icing and apple filling on top tasted like a cupcake made love to an apple pie! I highly recommend this one.

The Black Betty was a vanilla cake with blueberries and basic icing dyed black. I didn’t eat the fondant gravestone, but it was cute. Next time I venture over there I plan on trying the Bloody Sunday cupcake.

Punk Rock Pastries is open Wednesday through Sunday each week. Make sure to go early in the day because once they sell out, the store closes. If the doors are locked, you are out of luck. Orders can be placed ahead online for pick up as well.
